Overview
We use transportation every day, and public transportation, especially the subway, is one of the main transportation tools we use in our lives. After we got on the subway, maybe our journey was very far away, we want to listen to music, but we found that our earphones or cellphones suddenly ran out of power. Powerspot is a power bank rental machine that helps passengers with their running out of power devices charged during their journey.
The Problem
Since 2012, the functions of digital products have become increasingly diversified and used more frequently. The issue of how to improve the use time of digital products and maximize their functions has become increasingly important. The mobile power supply is the best solution to this demand. A power bank can provide power for a variety of digital products anytime, anywhere. Many people choose to carry a power bank when they go out, but...
1. Power bank also needs to be charged frequently.
In order for the power bank to function normally, we need to charge the power bank frequently. However, we may not feel that it is a very pleasant and convenient thing to charge the power bank while charging necessary devices such as mobile phones and computers. Also, we might forget to charge the power bank after a busy day. Therefore, buying and using a power bank will indeed bring us the convenience of charging at all times, but at the same time, we also add extra tasks and burdens to ourselves.
2. Bring a power bank is not that convenient.
Although the size of the power bank is friendly to those who carry bags of medium size or above. For people who don't use big bags and who carry small bags, the power bank is a burden. These people may only feel that the power bank is very useful when they need to charge their devices. When they don't need to use it, they will have nowhere to put it or take up too much space in the bag.
A design challenge emerged...
How might we improve people’s commute experience by solving their power outage emergencies?
Research
Starting with my own experiences on my cellphone running out of power on the transportation, as well as additional user interviews and research I made several insights into user behaviors at subway stations. Some main points I learned during this period include:
-
People usually choose to use their mobile phones for work-related content when commuting.
-
People get bored on the subway when their phone is running out of power because the subway doesn't have a view out of the window like a bus.
-
People usually have nothing to do while waiting for the subway.
-
People usually don’t have space to carry power banks because they’re heavy.
The Solution
Introducing Powerspot, a power bank rental machine that lends people the power bank to help people charge their devices using their time on the subway quickly and easily.
Ideation
I began the ideation process with our questions in mind and started to develop what this new product might look like and how it would solve these challenges. After several rounds of development, I created our final product sketches and I went to work 3D designing the final physical product.
